With support from the Justice, Law and Order Sector, Small Claims Procedure is now operational at Lukaya and Sanga Magistrates Courts following the launch of the initiative at the two courts on Tuesday July 21, 2020.
The initiative, which targets civil claims with subject matters below Shs 10, million is now operational in 90 courts.
The SCP launch at Lukaya and Sanga Courts were presided over by the Head of Commercial Court, Hon. Justice Dr Henry Peter Adonyo. The Senior Resident Judge Masaka, Hon. Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi witnessed the launch in Lukaya.
Magistrate Grade Lukaya, HW Jalia Basajjabalaba, thanked the Judges for agreeing to the scientific launch of the initiative. "As you can all see, this is a scientific launch but we are grateful you are here and we are ready to embrace this procedure, she said.
Hon. Justice Adonyo urged the public to embrace the initiative because it is affordable. "This initiative was introduced in 2012 and it’s here to help the needy...it deals with debts not exceeding 10 million shillings," he said.
Representatives of different JLOS institutions as well as civic leaders attended the launch. The LCIII Chairperson, Mr Majera Gerald, applauded the Judiciary for putting initiatives to benefit the indigent.
He appears to the Masaka Judge to organize a sensitization seminar so that all residents can appreciate SCP.
The Lukaya Resident District Commissioner, Mr Caleb Tukaikiriza, applauded the Magistrate for her diligence and team spirit. "She has often asked me to mediate in some cases, proof that we are all here to deliver Justice to all even if we come from different government institutions."
He also added that this procedure will definitely help the needy but also advised that people should learn how to write proper agreements so that they are not cheated.
Hon. Justice Kazibwe applauded the Magistrate for representing the Judiciary well. "The people present for this launch including the Civic leaders have said nothing but nice things about your service." He also thanked Justice Adonyo for making time to move with the SCP Secretariat to launch the procedure.
He urged the SCP Ag. Assistant Registrar, HW Lillian Bucyana, to make time and go back for mass sensitization."We need another day after COVID-19 passes to sensitize more people.
"I need everyone here to know that in Masaka region, our courts have an open door policy…we are here to deliver Justice to all."
In Sanga, another group of civic and religious leaders including the Mayor, His Worship Safari Mugyenyi attended the launch. He said they are ready to give more land to the Judiciary just like them given to other JLOS institutions.
They equally offered to translate the SCP users' guide in the local language so that everyone in the area can benefit.
Hon. Justice Adonyo took the participants through the different initiatives put in place by the Judiciary to improve service delivery and thanked them for embracing the initiative.
